OpenAI has launched the Decisions API in public beta for all developers, stating it allows applications to select models, tools, or actions up to 10 times faster than GPT-6 Luna through the Responses API.
Decisions API is available in limited preview and uses GPT-6 Luna for real-time decisions. Developers define questions and possible answers to classify content, route requests, or choose an agent’s next action.
Arena.ai now places OpenAI’s GPT-6 Luna (Max) on the Agent Arena Pareto frontier at +1.59% net improvement and a $0.05 median cost per task. It costs 29% less than DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash and 76% less than Hy4 preview, trailing those scores by 2.27 and 2.51 percentage points.
Arena.ai reports a +1.6% net improvement for OpenAI’s GPT-6 Luna (Max) across 8,000 real-world agentic sessions, at a $0.05 median cost per task. It did not reach the Agent Arena Pareto frontier.
Ali Ghodsi says a test of the latest AI models on 2,400 engineers shifted the cost/quality frontier. He says GPT-6 Luna is 20 times cheaper than Opus 5.5 for high-volume routing, while Opus 5.5 is now their daily default, with higher quality and a 20% lower cost than prior baselines.
Patrick Wendell says Databricks’ analysis of 2,400 engineers’ online workloads, plus offline evaluations, finds Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Luna expand the cost/quality frontier. Opus 5.5 cut same-task cost by 20% versus Opus 4.8, and Databricks is encouraging it as a daily default for coding.
OpenAI Developers says a bug that degraded image understanding in GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna has been fixed, and visual tasks in the API and Codex, including computer use, should now return better results.
GPT-6 Luna (Max) scores 1,593 points, 74 above GPT-5.6 Luna (xHigh) at 41st. Arena.ai says it matches Gemini 3.7 Flash High and Qwen 3.8-27B at a blended $0.40 per million tokens.
Pi says the three models are available on Radius at radius.earendil.com.
GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna build on advances behind GPT-6 Astra as faster, more affordable models for work at scale. OpenAI says more efficient caching and inference are reflected in API prices 50% lower than GPT-5.6 promotional pricing.
OpenAI reports that GPT-6 Luna scores 66.6% on DeepSWE v1.1, comparable to Claude Opus 5 and Fable 5 at medium effort for 93-96% less per task, and matches GPT-5.6 Sol on factuality at higher effort for about 1/100th the cost.
ChatGPT says access for Free and Go users is rolling out on September 22, 2026, and is for trying GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app.
